Abstract

This research article presents a comprehensive comparative analysis of the phonological
structures in two major South Asian languages, Urdu and Punjabi. Both languages are widely
spoken in the Indian subcontinent and share historical, cultural, and linguistic ties. The study
aims to identify and examine the similarities and differences in their phonological systems,
shedding light on the linguistic features that distinguish these languages. The analysis begins
with an overview of the phonetic inventories of Urdu and Punjabi, exploring the consonant and
vowel systems in both languages. This comparison reveals commonalities in certain phonemes
and highlights distinct sounds unique to each language. The study also investigates the
distribution and allophonic variations of phonemes, providing insights into phonological
processes that shape the speech patterns of native speakers.Furthermore, the research delves
into syllable structures and word-level phonotactics in Urdu and Punjabi. By analyzing syllable
patterns and permissible consonant clusters, the article uncovers linguistic constraints that
influence the formation of words and phrases in both languages. Additionally, the study
examines tone and stress patterns, exploring how these prosodic features contribute to the
overall phonological structure of Urdu and Punjabi.Through a detailed examination of
phonological structures, this comparative analysis contributes to the broader understanding of
language typology and linguistic diversity in the Indian subcontinent. The findings not only
enrich the knowledge of Urdu and Punjabi linguistics but also have implications for language
teaching, speech processing technologies, and cultural preservation efforts.Overall, the
research aims to foster a deeper appreciation for the intricate phonological intricacies of Urdu
and Punjabi, providing a foundation for further investigations into language evolution, contactinduced changes, and the intricate interplay between linguistic systems within the diverse
linguistic landscape of South Asia.
